Aloe Vera and Pregnancy

Teratogens

Substances that cause birth defects are known as teratogens. You and the fetus are particularly sensitive to teratogens during the first five months of the childbearing year (the two months prior to conception and the first three months of pregnancy). Exposure to teratogens interferes with the rhythmic reproductive dance of your genes, chromosomes, and cells. The effects of this disruption include infertility, miscarriage, low birth weight, and a wide range of mental and physical deformities in your baby. This list of teratogens is based on Terata: A Mother’s Prenatal Health Advisory compiled by Jo Carrasco and Sue Keller.

Most laxatives, including Flax seed, Senna, Aloes, Castor Oil, Turkey Rhubarb, Buckthorn, Cascara Sagrada.

Herbs for Varicosities

Avoid internal use of Aloe Vera products, and tea of Yellow or White Sweet Clover, as these herbs draw blood to the lower half of the body and can increase the problem. (Red Clover tea doesn’t)

Perineal Tears

Aloe Vera gel. Bottled Aloe Vera often contains preservatives which irritate sensitive skin, so-though it is a bit more work-use the gel from the fresh plant to make a poultice to heal and cool a torn perineum. Remove the green skin from several leaves, place the clear gel on a gauze pad or menstrual pad, hold or tape it in place. Aloe is remarkably pain killing when applied this way. Replace the poultice with a fresh one when the pain returns.

Remedies for Sore Nipples

Apply the clear gel from a fresh Aloe Vera leaf to soothe and heal sore and cracked nipples. Be sure to wash it off before nursing as the taste can be quite bitter.
