Has a nice cup of tea ever calmed your nerves? British researchers wondered whether the anecdotal stress-relieving properties of black tea would be borne out by a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. Seventy-five healthy men drank four cups daily of either black tea or a matched placebo for six weeks following a month-long wash-out period. The men participated in two acute stress challenges--one at the beginning of the trial and one at the end of the six-week treatment.

The challenges raised blood pressure, heart rate, and subjective stress ratings among all participants. Compared to the placebo group, however, the men taking black tea showed reduced platelet activation and lower post-task cortisol levels Tea drinkers also reported higher subjective relaxation after the test. Black tea may boost health "in part by aiding stress recovery," say researchers. Is the kettle on?
