Antibiotic Resistance Grows

Taste For Life Magazine, March 2006

Called a "silent epidemic," antibiotic-resistant staph infections, or methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), threaten a growing number of Americans. Of more than 10,000 subjects in one study, almost 3,000 had drug-resistant staph without knowing it or necessarily showing any symptoms.

When these people touch their noses and then shake hands without washing, they can spread drug-resistant bacteria. Liquid hand disinfectants leave a residue that increases bacterial resistance to antibiotics.

Instead, wash hands thoroughly with soap and water, says Tufts University's Stuart Levy, MD. And take special care of cuts, which are easy targets for MRSA. "Keep the wound covered, change the dressing without contaminating others, and don't share towels or other things that could be contaminated from the wound," advises medical epidemiologist Rachel Gorwitz, MD, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Starting off as small red bumps that resemble spider bites, staph infections are often hard to recognize. If these bumps develop black tops and become hot, seek immediate care.
