Botanical Beer

The Herb Quarterly Magazine, Summer 2006

Herb enthusiasts might soon have a new drink to sip, and we're not talking herbal tea. Created in India, Lady Bird Bio Beer is the first ale to feature, along with the traditional hops and barley malt, aloe vera and the herbs Phyllanthus niruri and ashwagandha.

After clinical studies showed that aloe vera increases the bioavailability of vitamins B1, B6, B12, C, and E, the beer's creator, Dr. B. Srinivasa Amaranth, realized that botanicals might provide for a healthier beer. So began a ten-year endeavor to produce a pleasant tasting beer containing healthy plant extractions. Phyllanthus niruri, and Indian herb, has been shown to possess liver protecting qualities in humans and animals. In one study, the plant protected rat livers from damage caused by alcohol. Ashwagandha is widely known Indian tonic herb used for energy and for its adaptatagenic qualities, which help the body adapt to stress.

According to Amaranth, Lady Bird's herbal additions do indeed make it a healthier alternative to conventional been. He says that long-term consumption of the beverage does not cause ulceration, gastric trouble, or other harmful effects. Amaranth, now the CEO of India-based beer producer Advaith Biotech Limited, also claims Lady Bird improves liver function, reduces blood cholesterol, and maintains normal bilirubin levels. Ready for a sip? Stay tuned: Recently launched in Canada, Lady Bird is on its way to the United States.
