Mint Hint

I’m writing to comment on “Digestive Enhancement,” a response made in the “Ask HQ” section of the Summer 2007 issue. I would like your readers to be aware that people with GERD, should not use peppermint or products containing peppermint, as this causes the esophageal sphincter to dilate, making GERD worse. I have seen this many times in my clinical practice. Clients come in for a consult and tell me they are drinking “mint” tea because they heard it was good for an “upset stomach.” Many don’t realize that with this specific condition, mint can prove harmful. People use the term “upset stomach” to describe myriad symptoms, so work with your doctor to determine what type of “upset” (imbalance) you might be experiencing.
