Lavender for the Blues

by Michael Castleman

The Herb Quarterly, Fall 2004

Herbalists have long used lavender as a minor tranquilizer to help relieve anxiety and promote sleep and digestion. Because of its mood-altering effects, lavender also works as an antidepressant. This benefit was proven recently in a study of 40 healthy women. Some added grapeseed oil to their bath; the others used grapeseed blended with lavender oil. After 14 baths, the participants completed mood surveys. The lavender group reported significantly less anger and frustration.

Lavender is unlikely to make the clouds of serious depression part. But if you're feeling a little blue, relief may be just a bath away. Add a few drops of lavender oil to a hot bath, or fill a cheesecloth bag with fresh or dried chopped lavender leaves and flowers, and run your bath water over it. You'll soon be saying "Ahhhh."
