Turmeric Might Treat Cystic FibrosisBy Michael CastlemanThe Herb Quarterly Magazine, Summer 2006Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a progressive and ultimately fatal hereditary disease in which thick mucus clogs the lungs. For those with severe CF, life expectancy is about 35, though those with less severe forms of the disorder often live longer. CF is one of the most prevalent inherited diseases, and some 190 million Americans carry the genetic defect that causes it. The condition affects the sodium/calcium balance in the lungs, and studies have shown that curcumin, the yellow pigment found in the Indian spice turmeric, can affect calcium levels, improving breathing function in the lungs. At Johns Hopkins University, researchers studying the complex biochemistry of CF tested curcumin on mice with the same genetic defect that causes CF in humans. While mice with CF rarely live beyond a few months, those treated with curcumin enjoyed dramatically extended survival. Only 10 percent of the treated mice died within 10 weeks, compared with 60 percent of untreated animals. It's too early to call curcumin a treatment for CF. Human trials are probably several years away. However, this study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, promises to open an exciting new avenue of CF research.
